Grand Tuesday Tomorrow 11/9!

Just a reminder that tomorrow’s meeting is GRAND TUESDAY, the 1 year anniversary of the first Tuesday meeting of what would become LVL1 :) .

Over the past year the story has consistently been the same: people curious about technology show up to see what LVL1 is about. They come in as strangers, but never leave that way. New folks are especially encouraged to attend! There is a huge amount of collective knowledge to share. There are lots of projects to scratch your geek; which could use some extra hands. LVL1 has created a space for these interactions to happen, but even more importantly we’ve created an open community. We’re using the Grand Tuesday 1 year anniversary to celebrate this fact.

There will be snacks and homebrew beer. And like every Tuesday, we’ll have an open build session and lots of geeking out.

All are welcome!

Solar Energy Solutions this Sunday!

This is just a reminder to everyone that Denis Oudard, a Project Manager from Solar Energy Solutions, will be at the space this Sunday Oct. 17th at 6PM to give a presentation about solar power systems. He will be hanging around to answer any questions that you may have about grid tied and standalone alternative energy setups, so if you’ve ever thought about a setup like this for your home or business, this would be a great time to ask questions and get some free answers.

I hope everyone can make it!

See you all on Sunday!

Teletron Composition @ Louisville Soundbuilders

Video of the Teletron Demonstration. This was performed at the 1st meeting of Louisville Soundbuilders at LVL1.

Score by Robert Schneider (The Apples in stereo). Performed by Robert Beatty (Hair Police) and Robert Schneider, September 20, 2010, at LVL1 Hackerspace (Louisville, Kentucky), using two Moog MG-1 synthesizers with two Teletron mind-control interfaces. Conducted by LVL1 president Chris Cprek (Pax Titania, Nzambi).

Post demonstration Q & A:

Contact Mic Workshop hosted by CMKT 4

Circuit-bending rock band CMKT 4 will be in town for a workshop on contact mics. They manufacture and sell bottle cap contact mics and plan to show how they do it. Bring cash if you want to purchase materials.

From CMKT 4:

We are circuit-bending rock band CMKT 4. We manufacture and sell bottle cap contact mics. We teach workshops about the process we use to make our microphones.

We price the workshops at $15 per person, which includes materials and instruction. Additional DIY kits are available at $10 apiece. We’ll also have finished mics for sale. We encourage people to bring instruments to which to add a piezo pickup or they can make a stand-alone model for use on various instruments.

Louisville Soundbuilders Meeting

This Monday Sept 20th we’re starting a Louisville Soundbuilder’s group that will be meeting every other Monday. We meet to talk shop about analog and digital synthesizers, circuit-bending, electronic noisemakers, computer music, etc. You are encouraged to bring equipment and show off some sounds. The focus is DIY and is a great resource for people that want to learn how to get started.

This first meeting will feature demonstrations from Robert Schneider of Apples in Stereo, Elephant 6, et al. He will be demonstrating his Teletron, a hacked Mindflex device for completely mind controlled synthesis experimentation. Some video here:

I will be demonstrating my homebuilt analog synthesizers, including exotic interfaces like the Klee sequencer (a bit shifted analog sequencer) and some experimentations in isomorphic keyboard design.

The meeting is at 8pm sharp, free to anyone who wants to attend, learn and contribute.

Software Freedom Day, Sept 18th @ LVL1

Computer geeks will descend on LVL1, Louisville’s new Hackerspace, on Saturday September 18, for a public demonstration of the power of open source software and the importance of open communications systems in a world that is becoming dependent on electronic communications to function.

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), coordinated by the non-profit organization Software Freedom International. Worldwide, almost 400 events are planned for the day. The Louisville celebration is being presented by LVL1 and the Kentucky Open Source Society (KYOSS).

Louisville’s event will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., September 18, at the LVL1 Hackerspace, in the rear of 814 East Broadway. Parking is available in a lot on Shelby Street behind the Hackerspace building.

Free and open source software (FOSS) refers to software whose underlying source code has been published in such a way that it can be used by anyone without cost and can be enhanced or altered by anyone without restriction. Some FOSS is software that has been placed in the public domain by its authors, while much is licensed by its original authors in a way that guarantees its continued openness to all.

Many FOSS programs and systems are maintained and enhanced by organized corps of volunteers, working in a free but coordinated manner. Some examples of FOSS software include:

  • Linux, a Unix-like operating system that has been popular for some time on business server computers, but is now being adopted around the world as a desktop system that rivals Windows.
  • Open Office, a word processor/spreadsheet/presentation system similar in function to Microsoft Word.
  • Apache, the web server software that powers much of the Web.
  • Highlights of the Louisville event include:

Geeks Without Borders presentation. Geeks Without Borders is a new “international coalition of passionate problem solvers working together to assist people whose survival is threatened by lack of access to technology or communications due to violence, neglect, or catastrophe.”

Linux Install-Fest. The public is invited to bring their computers to the event and install Linux on them. Various versions of (free) Linux software will be available, along with advice and assistance from LVL1 and KYOSS volunteers.

Demonstrations of Open Source software in action:

  • Open Office and other office software
  • Boxee home video streaming system
  • Open source graphics
  • Custom business “Web applications” based on open source software
  • Audio and video streaming broadcast systems
  • [Others are being added daily. Please call for the latest listing.]
The event will include free refreshments, compliments of LVL1.

    LVL1 Events this Weekend

This weekend is filled with awesome events LVL1 is a part of.

Friday is Actor’s Theatre of Louisville rooftop concert. We are labeled as AWESOMENESS on the flyer. Several members of LVL1 will be showing off projects at the event. There will be bands, art, music and a cash bar on the roof of the Actor’s Theatre parking garage.

Saturday afternoon between 1pm and 5pm we will be hosting Mitch Altman and Jimmie Rodgers for their traveling electronics workshop. Mitch and Jimmie are currently touring Midwest hackerspaces, teaching electronics and soldering to anyone interested *for free*. Mitch is the inventor of the TV-B-Gone, Trip Glasses, a founder of Noisebridge in San Francisco, widely regarded as a pioneer of Virtual Reality and all around cool guy. Jimmie Rodgers is a full time hacker, maker and circuit bender. He sells kits for Open Heart v2.0, Atari Punk Console and LoL shield. Instruction is free and they are selling kits for attendees to build *at cost of materials* in the $10-$30 range. LVL1 is excited to have them!

And this Sunday night at the Rudyard Kipling I will be performing my homemade synthesizers in my band Nzambi.

    Repost: Thanks are in order!

By request, this is the thank you email posted to the list:

    Hello all,

Last night’s Open Haus was such an overwhelming success that I didn’t
have a chance to thank everyone properly.

Thank you to Kwau-La-Waul Properties and the Zink family for leasing
us such a fantastic space. Steve Jr. did a great job doing the build
out for us. They put in the new walls, plumbing, A/C, electric and
    replacement doors windows.

Thank you to bluegrass.net for providing the internet connection and IPs gratis.

Thank you to Matt Frassica at the Courier-Journal for coming out to
    check out what we’re doing.

Thank you to the Collexion members who came up to help us celebrate.

Thank you to everyone who brought projects to show off!

Most importantly, thank you to all the founding members who’ve
contributed their knowledge, time and finances to make LVL1 a reality.
The contributions are too many to mention, so I won’t even bother. It
takes a leap of faith to try and bootstrap a community like ours
without any guarantee of success. You are heroes, every last one of
    you.

9 short months ago, Brian and Mark put out a post to see who else in
Louisville was interested in starting a hackerspace like the other
spaces popping up all over the US. People showed up. And they kept
showing up. We self-organized and came up with a plan to bootstrap
this thing. The plan worked! 9 short months from nothing but an idea
to an awesome real physical space.

The first question I always get when I talk about what LVL1 is
doing… What exactly is a hackerspace? It’s a surprisingly difficult
question to answer. I think it has something to do with computers and
electronics… These spaces are so conceptually new, that there isn’t
a lot of history to help define them. The best I can think of is to
offer analogies. Musicians need venues to perform at. Basketball
players need courts to play on. Painters need galleries to show off
their work. Skateboarders need skateparks to show off their tricks.
Poets need open mic nights to read their work. etc. etc. Tinkerers,
makers, hackers, programmers and engineers need hackerspaces to work,
learn, share and socialize. Computers and electronics alone touch
almost every facet of our modern lives, so the breadth of possible
projects is incredibly large. And a hackerspace can be much more than
just computers and electronics. I think that was demonstrated by the
wide variety of projects on display last night!

Now that we have our space, let’s move boldly forward. Our success as
a hackerspace should be measured by the good times we have, the
friends we make and the great projects we create. Remember all the
things that have helped us build a great community and keep doing
them. Go out of your way to be open and welcoming to new members.
Share what you know. If you want something to happen, take the lead to
make it happen. Don’t be intimidated by what you don’t know. Figure
out where to start, be prepared to fail, readjust and try again. All
of the democracy and voting in the world is no substitute for a
healthy culture of learning and doing.

Thanks again. I looking foward to this time next year, when we can
look back and again be pleasantly surprised by what has been
    accomplished.

I will now officially exercise the sole privilege of my office and
redesignate my LVL1 title from “Chief Tyrant of the Collective Will”
    to “Micro Colonel”.

    High 5s all around!

    /Chris
