ANNOUNCING - LVL1's 2nd annual Sumobot tournament will be on October
29th, 2011, 8PM at 814e Broadway (our home). There will be a Halloween
party following the fun - costumes are encouraged! All are welcome to
join in the festivities. You may even get to see the world famous fire
breathing pony, Buttercup! You now have a month to build your bot.

UPDATE: The ring we will use is made of MDF painted FLAT BLACK with a GLOSS
WHITE border ring.  The rubber surface of the last ring was just to
hard to source, build, maintain and paint.

UPDATE 2: Solarbotics just sent some awesome prizes for the sumo
winners! If you are looking for some sumo parts, please check out what
they can offer... http://www.solarbotics.com/

LVL1ers had an awesome time at Hive13 (Cincinatti's Hackerspace) this weekend. Hive13 did a great job hosting a Sumobot competition. The competition was staged in an actual boxing ring at the gym next door to Hive 13! A big thanks to the owners of the boxing gym. What a great venue. Many bots competed, but the LVL1 bots rose to the top. Jose won with "Lessor".

Here is the actual video of the rounds.

I would like to sincerely thank Hive13 for hosting this event. It is fantastic to get to know you all. It should also be noted that Hive13 made an excellent web app that organizes Sumobot competions - check it out http://sumobots.hive13.org/. LVL1 will be hosting our second Sumobot competition in the Fall of 2011, probably October. You have 6 months to build your next Bot! All competitors are welcome, especially other hackerspaces (Lexington, Dayton, Indy, Bloomington, Nashville...). Hope to see you there!

Yuri's Night

This Tuesday is shaping up to be a Super Tuesday!  Tuesdays at 8:00pm are our regular meeting times, but this Tuesday, 4/12/11, we're throwing in a Sumo-bot throw-down, and a Yuri's Night  Celebration.

What: LVL1 Tuesday Meeting, Yuri's Night Celebration, and Sumo-bot throw-down!

When: Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Where: The LVL1 Hackerspace, 814 East Broadway, Entrance on the rear alley

For visitors, our regular meetings usually consist of 30 minutes of talking about LVL1 business, events, and miscellany, followed by building, hacking, making and general mayhem, extending well into the night.  This Tuesday, however, we'll be celebrating Yuri's Night, a world-wide party commemorating the 50th anniversary of mankind first slipping the surly bonds of earth, and extending our reach into space.

LVL1 will be hosting members of the Louisville Astronomical Society for some urban star gazing, and we'll be trying to listen for the ARRISat, an amateur radio satellite currently attached to the International Space Station, transmitting just for Yuri's Night, before it becomes fully armed and operational later this year.

In addition, almost a dozen members of the LVL1 community have been working on Sumo-bots for the upcoming tournament at Hive13, Cincinnati's hackerspace.  We've got enough bots running around here for our own tournament, so we'll be doing exposition matches all evening, building, testing and tweaking our sumos!

Come one, come all to LVL1 this Tuesday at 8:00pm.  Anyone and everyone is always welcome.

As you may have read on a prior post, Brian and I are looking to create a $50 mini-sumobot to "A" see if its possible, and "B" share our results with other hackers out there, especially new ones that are considering building a low budget bot.  We will be providing our data, design and source code to any who want to see it.  This post is to outline the parameters of the project.

Before we can get started, we want to establish some parameters with regard to our design.  This design should hopefully meet the following requirements:
